A billion dollar industry needed your body to feel like it was the problem. But it never was.
The problem was never your willpower.
You've probably spent years thinking the problem was your discipline, your willpower, your relationship with food.
This series moves the blame off you and onto the system that profited from your doubt. You stop auditing yourself and start seeing the setup.
That shift is the whole point, and it's the thing that actually loosens diet culture's grip.
No one else is doing this.
Most anti-diet content tells you to stop dieting.
This series tells you why you started, and why it felt like your own idea.
We’re tracing diet culture's move all the way back to how you're built, so you stop fighting the symptom and see the actual machinery.
There’s a real tool within.
We're starting to see data confirm what Enneagram folks have known for decades- that it actually explains why people do what they do.
At its heart, the Enneagram is a tool for understanding yourself more deeply and going easier on yourself, and on everyone else too.
Here, it's pointed at one thing: showing you exactly how diet culture found its way in, so you can shut it out.
“★★★★★”
A "hack that felt like a fight," my entire life could be summed up in that phrase. I've been trying to build my own army, one woman at a time who could "ignore" diet culture along with me by refusing to be controlled. Knowing now that I retreat as an Investigator type and heal as a Helper type really shows me the cycles of harm and healing that I have been on throughout my life. I really think the step to "activate my own protection detail" will be a life changer, and that absolutely will be my focus in the coming months as I rewatch this series. You have given me beautiful insights and gentle acceptance.
‘I am here, that is enough.’ Such important words for me. Sophia is so astute about how we come to see ourselves, what underlies it, and how this all gets interwoven with diet culture. I found her to be spot on in describing so much of how I (as a number 2- Helper) react, but so full of kindness and compassion, with a strategy for the path forward.
The Individualist episode felt like it was speaking directly to parts of me I've struggled to put into words. I remember being a kid in the locker room at school looking at the other kids and feeling sick to my stomach and like I could never have a normal life because of my body. When the episode talked about using envy as a compass for my longing, I realized that it was confidence, relationships, and joy that I was really envious of all those years ago in the locker room. This reframe will help me let go of the shame I feel around envy, and instead have it guide me toward what I'm really wanting. That shift alone felt worth the entire listen.
Love everything about this podcast: Sophia’s guests, her politics, the poems she chooses, and most especially, her voice and laugh are the best!
this podcast is pure warmth and kindness. I really appreciate how the conversations flow so easily and the topics are shared in a down to earth way (as opposed to academic).
This is a lovely, enlightening, mind-broadening podcast about fat joy and liberation. Real, deep topics with a light touch. Highly recommend to fat people wanting community and straight-sized people wanting to be allies.
One of the voices that feeds actual logic to our diet-cultute-corrupted brains. thank you, sophia for your poems, ease, and resistance, and for always bringing it back to joy.
For every version of me that tried to be thin, for every diet and fad and cleanse I did to try and claim my inner thinness, this podcast helps throw that in the garbage and claim the amazing version of me that just wants to take up space.
If you like Maintenance Phase you will love this podcast. It is so relaxing to listen to other fat people's stories and see how many of the same threads are woven between all of us. Sophia has so many great guests, some I've heard of and others I've been so happy to have found! Keep up the great work!
A joy to listen to, and I've learned so much from the engaging discussions!
I absolutely love this new podcast! Sophia's smooth like butter voice, and the content and guests are outstanding. Thank you for sharing this podcast with the world!
This podcast just really resonates with me. Understanding and reclaiming the word 'fat' has been huge for me, and I love hearing the openness and transparency of the interviewer and all the interviewees alongside their experiences, both positive and negative. Thank you for creating a space for the continuing conversation around this topic. Representation really is key. Highly recommend!!
Every episode so far has been so thoughtful, so resonant and so joyful! The episode with Luna was especially radical for me. Thank you!
This is the body podcast we all need! Stop reading and just subscribe.
I just finished listening to this excellent podcast and have a real feeling of connection and a sense of having found "my people" here. Living in a fat body brings plenty of challenges with it. Thank you Sophia for acknowledging all of this AND for exploring the joy of taking up space!
I’m new to my path of reclaiming my body from the diet industry and the pervasive anti fat culture we live in. Sofia has been the best companion on this path. She’s introduced me via her interviews to amazing guests. Her questions are sharp and insightful and she’s very open and honest about her own loved experience. She’s the kinda podcast host I want invite to dinner as I know we could carry on these amazing conversations.
I’m so happy to have this podcast as a source of education and support. We need more people talking about these issues! Sophia is so relatable and makes me feel less alone. She interviews some fantastic guests who are doing the work that is helping change our world for the better.
If you have a twisted inner monologue about bodies that you think is your voice (most of us do!), this show will set you straight in the most positive, helpful way. Listening is like having a long held splinter removed from your paw.
I found this podcast after the Aubrey Gordon episode and binged all the episodes available immediately afterwards. As a straight sized person my whole life, this podcast has allowed me to learn more about the experiences and perspectives of fat people in their own words versus hearing what straight-sized or medical people think is the experience of living in a fat body. I’ve learned a lot about how to be more mindful and validating towards fat people and also how to be an ally to them. I love this podcast and hope it continues for a long time! Thank you for making it.
The host is considerate, inquisitive and welcoming; guests are from interesting walks of life. Casual, constructive, friendly vibe.
I love this podcast. It honestly feels like a chat with a wise friend who really cares. The host is excellent and the guests are informative. Yay!
Brain altering podcast! Everyone needs to listen
It’s like sitting in on a chat with friends who know what it’s like. I’m a Patreon supporter too, which gets me extra goodies.
Sophia provides a much-needed platform for larger-bodied people to share their stories in a safe, supportive space. The interviews are thoughtful, interesting and insightful. More then anything, I love how the show celebrates body diversity and gives a big middle finger to our weight-stigmatizing world.
What happens as you listen to episodes:
Clarity that something has run in the background your whole life. You'll start hearing diet culture's voice as separate from your own, which means you finally get to choose which one to listen to.
Permission to want things again. Food, rest, pleasure, all the stuff you learned to ration or earn.
Anger in the right direction, pointed at the industry that profited instead of at yourself.
Practices you'll actually use, small and doable, for finding your way back to your own voice.
