Show Notes

Many fat people don’t feel at home in the gym. We may want to bring more movement into our lives, but there can be many barriers- unsafe spaces, our own inner critic voice, physical challenges with equipment and instructors not knowing how to work with differently sized bodies, etc. That’s why we’ve got Becky Scott (she/her/hers) on the pod today. We’re talking about all aspects of fat-friendly fitness, our personal experiences with exercise, and options for bringing movement and fitness into your life on your terms.

Becky Scott found body positivity and fat liberation in her early thirties after a lifetime of self-hate, ‘failed’ diets and exercise regimes. By following bloggers and influencers, she began to challenge her views on the diet industry, find peace with her body and grow in self-confidence. She rediscovered her love of dance and joyful movement and found it liberating! She began to blog about her experiences as a plus size Health at Every Size fitness enthusiast and became a This Girl Can Ambassador in her home county.

Becky has since trained as a fitness instructor and now leads her own dance-based exercise classes - MissFits Workout! She promotes a holistic approach to fitness and wellbeing that’s not about aesthetics - She’s more about building confidence than muscle, more about losing inhibitions than inches. Becky’s approach offers a great introduction to dance-based group fitness for those who don’t feel at home in the gym - with a plus size instructor who has designed routines with plus size bodies in mind. Becky has recently been awarded the Inclusive Award 2021 at the national Community Fitness Awards for her work to make fitness more accessible to those who don’t feel welcome in traditional fitness spaces.
